Weld cross-section

Cross-section area
-
Weld length (one)
-
Weld metal volume
-
Deposited weight
-
Weld metal mass = cross-section area × weld length × density
Groove areas = root opening + bevel/radius fill + cap (and root bead for one-sided welds). Pipe weld length uses the centroid diameter of the weld area (Pappus). Use the joint detail from your WPS or drawing for binding quotations.
B

Electrode, wire & flux

Filler purchased = deposited mass ÷ [deposition efficiency × (1 − stub loss)]  |  Net flux = wire × flux ratio × (1 − recovery)
C

Shielding & purge gas

Shielding gas = flow × arc time × (1 + allowance)  |  Purge gas = purge flow × purge time
SMAW, SAW and self-shielded FCAW (e.g. E71T-11) report zero shielding gas. Back-purge may still apply to stainless and alloy pipe roots.
D

Arc time, labour hours & heat input

Arc time = deposited mass ÷ deposition rate  |  Labour = arc time ÷ operating factor × position × (1 + repair) + fixed times
HI

Arc energy, heat input, passes & shrinkage

Arc energy E = V × I × 60 / (1000 × v) [kJ/mm, ASME IX QW-409.1, AWS D1.1]  |  Heat input Q = k × E [ISO/TR 17671-1]
For waveform-controlled power sources, ASME IX QW-409.1(c) requires instantaneous energy or power from the machine display instead of V × I. Transverse shrinkage uses the Spraragen-Walton screening relation and varies widely with restraint and sequence.

The efficiency score (0-100) blends operating factor, deposition efficiency, filler waste and margin. It is for comparing scenarios, not an accounting figure.

NDT

Non-destructive testing

Typical extents: ASME B31.3 normal fluid service 5% random RT/UT; ASME VIII spot or full RT per UW-11/UW-12 joint efficiency; AWS D1.1 per contract documents. Follow the project ITP.
PWHT

Post-weld heat treatment

click to toggle
P-No.1 holding (ASME VIII-1 UCS-56): t ≤ 50 mm: 1 h per 25 mm, 15 min minimum; t > 50 mm: 2 h + 15 min per extra 25 mm. Above 425 °C heating ≤ 5550/t °C/h (max 222), cooling ≤ 6950/t °C/h (max 278), neither need be below 55 °C/h.
Holding temperature, time and exemptions differ by code and P-No. (ASME B31.3 Table 331.1.1, ASME VIII UCS-56, EN 13445-4). Use the governing thickness defined in your code.
CE

Carbon equivalent & preheat screening

CE(IIW) = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15  |  Pcm = C + Si/30 + (Mn+Cu+Cr)/20 + Ni/60 + Mo/15 + V/10 + 5B  |  CET = C + (Mn+Mo)/10 + (Cr+Cu)/20 + Ni/40
Screening only. Minimum preheat must come from the qualified WPS, the code (e.g. AWS D1.1 prequalified preheat table, ASME B31.3 Table 330.1.1) or EN ISO / EN 1011-2 methods using thickness, hydrogen level and heat input.

Method, standards & self-test

Calculation chain

  1. Joint cross-section area from geometry (root opening, bevel or radius, cap, root bead).
  2. Deposited mass = area × length × density.
  3. Filler purchased = deposited mass ÷ deposition efficiency (and stub loss for SMAW).
  4. Arc time = deposited mass ÷ deposition rate.
  5. Labour hours = arc time ÷ operating factor × position factor × (1 + repair) + fit-up, preheat, set-up and interpass cleaning.
  6. Cost = labour + equipment + power + consumables + gas + grinding + QC (+ NDT, PWHT if included), then overhead and profit.

Standards referenced

AWS A2.4 and ISO 2553 (joint and symbol terminology), AWS D1.1/D1.1M and ISO 5817 (weld profile and quality levels), ASME BPVC Section IX QW-409.1 (arc energy), ISO/TR 17671-1 (thermal efficiency factor k), ASME B31.3 (reinforcement limits, NDT extent, PWHT), ASME VIII Div.1 UCS-56 (PWHT holding and heating rates), ASME B36.10M (pipe dimensions), ISO 14175 (shielding gases), ISO 4063 (process numbers), ISO 6947 (welding positions).
